On 19-20 October 2009, the international conference on natural refrigerants was held in the European capital Brussels to bring together industry experts and policy makers to discuss CO₂, ammonia, and hydrocarbons as refrigerants.

As a milestone on the way to Post-Kyoto discussions in Copenhagen in December 2009, ATMOsphere set out to sum up the technical, political and economic challenges natural refrigerants are still facing. More than 30 high-profile speakers will talk about real-life examples where to use natural refrigerants.

Some highlights:

• The first comprehensive practical guide on the use of CO₂ systems in the EU was handed out to all participants.
•  All three natural refrigerants will have their own workshop sessions to raise their profile.
•  A call for action paper to consider natural refrigerants in a Copenhagen Protocol on greenhouse gases will be presented to speak with one voice on behalf of all advocates of HFC-free solutions.
